We have just completed a major redesign of our beloved mac password manager website. We have had lots of feedback that the original site was just “too complex” and had “too much information”. In fact, my wife even asked me if we were affiliated with GMail!! (The original screenshot was taken on the GMail website.)
Clearly we we not getting our main messages across:
- Direct browser integration makes 1Passwd unlike any other Mac password managers.
- The automatic form filler technology outclasses the Safari & Camino AutoFill features. And ours works in Firefox too!
- Keychain integration saves you from having “Yet another database” that you need to manage and backup.
- 1Passwd is the only password manager that protects you from Phishing and Keylogger criminals.
Needless to say, the above points contain too much information to push onto a new user that visits the website for the first time. We needed a way to gently ease new users into 1Passwd. Here was our plan of attack:
- Have one simple message: 1Passwd saves you time. Guaranteed.
- Add an introductory movie that quickly explains the key features of 1Passwd in order to get users excited enough to download and install 1Passwd.
- Once installed, make it very easy for the user to find additional information from within the application itself. Don’t expect the user to find it from the web.
In summary, the goal of the new home page is to compel visitors to download 1Passwd, not to sell it. Given the chance, 1Passwd will sell itself as a secure password manager that saves you time.
Here are some screenshots comparing the sites.
